Types of Snow Groomers for Cross Country Skiing

Snow Groomers for Nordic skiing generally fall into two categories:

  1. Free Skating
  2. Classic Skiing

Free skate skiing is where you ski the entire trail which is a fast-paced, more modern skiing technique. Typically, free skating lanes are 10-12 feet wide.

Classic skiing is the more traditional form of skiing. Your skis remain parallel in set groomed tracks in the snow. With Classic skiing, you generally don’t need more than a couple of feet for the set tracks and also a groomed surface for your ski poles.

Can your Trail have both Free Skate Skiing and Classic Skiing?

Yes, this is a common setup for Nordic Centers and larger trail systems. You can have your skiing lanes with free skating and set classic tracks, typically on the edges of the trail systems. That way, both cross-country skiing user groups can use the same trail systems.
